Burlington Adopts MRE Classroom
Tuesday, November 13, 2018 -
Every teacher has a wish list.
While the classroom is filled with supplies and furniture, there is always an elusive item or two (…or three or …) that a teacher would love to add. For Morgan Road Elementary kindergarten teacher Luanne Burlingame that includes items such as flexible seating, science/STEM manipulatives, or fine motor skills activities.
When the Burlington store on Route 31 recently reached out to Burlingame and told her it wanted to adopt her classroom, she was thrilled.
“I am very thankful that there are companies out there that think about teachers and support them,” Burlingame said.
Representatives from Burlington, which partners with the Adopt a Classroom program, recently presented Burlingame and MRE Principal Brett Woodcock with a check for $1,100. The grant money can be used to purchase items for her classroom, and Burlingame noted that she will share the new supplies with fellow MRE kindergarten teachers Maureen Conklin and Melissa Harrington.
On average teachers spend approximately $740 a year of their own money on classroom supplies. The Adopt a Classroom program was established to help assist teachers and advance “equity in education by powering today’s classrooms to prepare tomorrow’s graduates.” To accomplish this, Adopt a Classroom partners with companies and organizations across the country to help teachers purchase those extra supplies for their classrooms.
