LCSD Land Yacht Regatta
Friday, May 15, 2020 -
The Liverpool Central School District Land Yacht Regatta is a unique STEM event that allows participants the opportunity to design and build a land yacht (within a range of specifications), and have their yacht raced against other yachts entered in the STEM competition. This STEM challenge is intended to be a family activity for students in grades K-12.
This link will give you access to a short video that provides an overview of how to construct a sail car/land yacht (click here).
It is important to note that the yacht can be modified to the creator’s liking, as long as it falls within the prescribed specifications. Yachts can be constructed from a variety of materials that individuals have around their home. If you do not have the materials at your home to construct a yacht, you are welcome to email LCSD Executive Director of Elementary Education Richard Chapman (firstname.lastname@example.org) to schedule an appointment to pick up a kit that contains the basic materials for building. Please place “Land Yacht” in the subject line when you send the email.
Construction of the yachts will take place at the home of the person building the yacht (build sessions WILL NOT BE held in LCSD buildings). Yachts must be dropped off (placed in the STEM Dropbox) at the LCSD District Office (195 Blackberry Road in Bayberry) between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4p.m. Monday through Friday during the week of June 1, 2020. The last day to drop off a yacht is Friday, June 5, 2020.
- The yacht’s maximum length can be no longer than 35 cm (13.75 inches).
- The yacht’s maximum width can be no wider than 25.5 cm (10 inches). These dimensions are roughly the length and width of a men’s shoe box.
- The height of the yacht’s deck can be no higher than 13 cm (5 inches).
- The overall height of the yacht’s sail mast, when measured from the ground, can be no higher than 74 cm (29 inches).
- The sail must have a length and width no larger than 21 cm by 28 cm (roughly the size of an 8.5’ by 11’ sheet of paper).
The LCSD Land Yacht Regatta will be held on Thursday, June 11, 2020. It will start at 4 p.m. and continue until there is a winner. Although participants are not allowed to attend the event in person, they can view the races from the comfort of their own home via a Livestream feed (the link will be shared with participants prior to the event).
