LHS Girls Mod 9 Volleyball Team Builds Beds for CNY Children
Monday, January 27, 2020 -
For most kids, having a place to sleep every night is something they take for granted. That’s why it’s so hard to believe that some children in Central New York don’t have a bed to call their own.
When Liverpool High School Girls Modified 9 Volleyball Coach Steve Kushnir recently shared his experience with a local organization making beds for children who need them, his players were eager to help as well.
The student-athletes recently spent several hours volunteering with the Syracuse chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace. The organization builds, assembles and delivers beds to children and families in need.
The teammates, all freshmen at the LHS Annex, had the opportunity to learn about the organization’s history, then work alongside volunteers to help build parts for several beds. The players were tasked with sanding & cutting wood, drilling holes and assembling headboards.
LHS volleyball player and freshman Michelle Rhodes said the opportunity to volunteer with the Syracuse chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace was a wonderful team-building experience that also allowed them to help other children.
Fellow volleyball player Lily Stevens noted that members of the LHS Girls Modified 9 Volleyball Team played volleyball at different middle schools last year and volunteering brought the student-athletes closer together.
In all, approximately 500 children are on the organization’s waiting list, a fact that came as quite a surprise to team members.
“It felt humbling to help someone else,” Rhodes said.
Stevens agreed, “I felt proud that someone now has a bed to sleep in.”
