LCSD Anticipates Sleep Survey Distribution in Late March

The Liverpool Central School District Board of Education recently approved the implementation of a sleep survey that will evaluate the current sleep health of district students and its association with academic success. Conducted by a team from the Children’s National Health System in Washington D.C., the survey will help the district continue its exploration of Modified School Start Times.
The district anticipates that surveys will be distributed electronically in late March, with results available to the board in June. There will be two separate studies – one for LCSD students in grades six through 12 and a second for parents, teachers and community members.
Dr. Daniel Lewin, associate director of the pediatric sleep medicine program at CNHS and an associate professor of pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine, is helping the district finalize the survey which will collect data on socio-demographics, sleep (duration, timing of sleep period, sleep quality, daytime tiredness & napping), transportation, academic performance, school attendance, extra-curricular activities and risk-taking behavior.
Prior to the start of the student survey, which will be administered during the school day, the district will contact parents to explain the context of questions featured in the survey. Parents who decide they do not want their child(ren) participating in the survey will have the opportunity to sign and return an opt out form.
Parents, teachers and community members will receive notification via SchoolMessenger and the Key Communicator when their portion of the survey is available. The link to the survey also will be posted on the LCSD Web site (www.liverpool.k12.ny.us).
LCSD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mark F. Potter said that the surveys will assist the district in analyzing the feasibility of changing school hours for LCSD students at the elementary, middle and high school levels.
“While the district has reviewed numerous studies regarding the modified school start time topic, the most valuable information we can consider is data provided to us by those who will be impacted by a possible change,” Potter said. “By participating in this survey students, parents and teachers will provide us with real-world information that will help us understand questions and concerns our stakeholders may have on this topic.”
Please note that at this time the board has not approved any scenarios presented to it by the Modified School Start Time Committee.
