LHS Arctic Warriors Prepare for Upcoming Competitions

Wednesday, March 1, 2017 -

Liverpool High School’s championship-winning team is ready to compete once again at the Finger Lakes Regional Championship, held at the Rochester Institute of Technology from March 16 to 18, and the Buckeye Regional Championship, held at Cleveland State University from March 30 to April 1.

Team 174, also known as the Arctic Warriors, has worked long and hard to build a robot specifically designed for this year’s FIRST® Robotics competition called FIRST® Steamworks. With no knowledge of the game prior, Team 174 had six weeks to design, prototype and build a robot that is quick and maneuverable so it can acquire, manipulate and score gears. Secondarily, the robot is designed to climb a rope at the end of each match.

This task requires students to meet four days a week for three hours each day. More than 40 students and 15 mentors have honorably set their minds to each task, regardless of possible failure or struggles with their designs.

Team 174 is divided into four general teams to accomplish specific jobs that contribute to the robot. The programming team develops strategies, programs the robot and the scouting site. The fabrications team manufactures the robot’s parts from CAD drawings and anything else required. The mechanical team designs the robot using CAD drawings and assembles the final product. The communications team documents the season, creates handouts and designs advertisements.

“It gives the students the opportunity to work on a real project just like at any company,” said Team 174 mentor Andrew Litteer. “It gives them real world experience - brainstorming, designing, building and testing the product just as you would for a customer.”

Of course with such expenses of building a robot, Team 174 could not make it alone without the gracious sponsors that help along the way. These sponsors include UTC Carrier, Lockheed Martin, SRC, New York Optometric, Doug Johnson and family, Empire Tele Con LLC and Kinvergent.
