Update Regarding Modified School Start Times
Friday, January 6, 2017 -
Happy New Year to all of our families!
Many of you have posed questions regarding our exploration of modified school start times and I would like to provide you with an update on our progress.
In 2014, the American Academy of Pediatrics released a recommendation that adolescents, particularly those of high school age, have their school start times delayed to better align with their natural sleep patterns. Intrigued by this recommendation and a research project conducted by a cross-disciplinary team of Liverpool Central School District teachers, the Board of Education formed a Modified School Start Times Committee featuring parents, teachers, administrators and community members.
In January 2016, the committee was tasked with developing a plan that would have high school and potentially middle school students start school later in the morning. This would present an opportunity to also change elementary start times to take advantage of the elementary students' own sleep patterns and physiology.
After several months of discussion and research, the committee has proposed several scenarios. The district has drafted a Request for Proposal and is now seeking an educational consultant to review these scenarios and help us determine if they are feasible for our district. Any proposal must meet the needs of all affected populations, including extra-curricular activities (athletics and fine arts in particular), BOCES students, non-traditional students, parents, the community, and, of course, students.
These scenarios are in the early stages and have not been approved by the LCSD Board of Education. We do not anticipate any modifications to start times for the 2017-2018 school year.
I will let you know when the committee is ready to present its final recommendation to the board. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by phone (315-622-7125) or e-mail (MPotter@liverpool.k12.ny.us).
